Äänenintensiteetti, often translated as sound intensity, is a physical quantity that describes the power carried by sound waves per unit area in a direction perpendicular to that area. It is a measure of the energy flow of a sound wave. The standard unit for sound intensity is watts per square meter (W/m²).

Sound intensity is directly proportional to the square of the pressure amplitude of the sound wave and inversely proportional to the density of the medium and the speed of sound. Mathematically, it can be expressed as I = p²/ (ρv), where I is the intensity, p is the pressure amplitude, ρ is the density of the medium, and v is the speed of sound in that medium.

Because the range of sound intensities that humans can perceive is vast, sound intensity is often expressed on a logarithmic scale called the sound intensity level. This level is measured in decibels (dB). A sound intensity level of 0 dB corresponds to the threshold of human hearing, which is approximately 10⁻¹² W/m². For every 10 dB increase, the sound intensity increases by a factor of 10. For example, a sound at 10 dB has 10 times the intensity of a 0 dB sound, while a 20 dB sound has 100 times the intensity of a 0 dB sound.

Understanding sound intensity is crucial in fields such as acoustics, audio engineering, and noise pollution control, as it allows for the objective measurement and comparison of sound levels.
