These folds are located within the larynx, which sits at the top of the trachea, or windpipe. When breathing, the vocal folds are typically open, allowing air to pass freely.

Sound production occurs when the vocal folds come together and air from the lungs is forced through the narrow opening between them, called the glottis. This airflow causes the vocal folds to vibrate rapidly. The frequency of these vibrations determines the pitch of the sound produced. Higher frequencies result in higher pitches, while lower frequencies produce lower pitches.
