Äänenhuulet

Äänenhuulet, also known as vocal folds or vocal cords, are a pair of muscular flaps in the larynx or voice box. They are essential for producing sound in humans and many other vertebrates. These folds are located within the larynx, which sits at the top of the trachea, or windpipe. When breathing, the vocal folds are typically open, allowing air to pass freely.

Sound production occurs when the vocal folds come together and air from the lungs is forced through the narrow opening between them, called the glottis. This airflow causes the vocal folds to vibrate rapidly. The frequency of these vibrations determines the pitch of the sound produced. Higher frequencies result in higher pitches, while lower frequencies produce lower pitches. The tension and length of the vocal folds can be adjusted by various muscles in the larynx, allowing for control over pitch.

The quality and loudness of the voice are also influenced by the way the vocal folds vibrate and how the airflow is managed. Beyond speech, vocal fold vibration is crucial for singing, as well as for other vocalizations. The health and proper functioning of the vocal folds are vital for clear and healthy voice production. Conditions affecting the vocal folds can lead to hoarseness, loss of voice, or other voice disorders.
