Üvegszer

Üvegszer is a Hungarian term used to refer collectively to glassware—the glass vessels and instruments used in laboratories and related fields to contain, measure, mix, heat, or observe substances. The word derives from üveg (glass) and szer (device or tool) and is attested in Hungarian technical and educational texts from the late 19th century onward. It does not denote a single item but a category of objects comprising various glass vessels and instruments.

In historical usage, üvegszer encompassed a broad range of laboratory glassware used in chemistry, biology, medicine, and industry. Catalogs, manuals, and curricula sometimes referred to the entire set of glass apparatus under this label. The term reflects a period when generic classifications were common before the standardization of nomenclature by item type.

In contemporary Hungarian, while üvegszer may still be recognized as a historical or literary term, more precise terminology is preferred in professional settings. Modern texts typically name individual items (such as flasks, beakers, test tubes, and funnels) or use the broader English loanword "laboratory glassware" for international communication.
