Örverurog is a theoretical concept in social-ecological systems used to describe a pattern by which communities organize collective action in response to intermittent resource scarcity. The term, used primarily in ethnographic and resilience studies, refers to an emergent, layered network of informal cooperation that operates across households and local groups without central authority. It emphasizes redundancy, modular cooperation, and adaptive decision-making that can reconfigure itself quickly as local conditions change.

The concept originated from cross-disciplinary fieldwork in northern European rural communities in the late 20th century, and has since circulated in scholarly discussions about community resilience and disaster response. Örverurog patterns typically involve small-scale reciprocal exchanges, shared labor, and memory-based knowledge transfer, enabling rapid mobilization of labor and goods during crises while maintaining overall social cohesion in ordinary times.

In practice, examples cited include communal meal programs, tools and equipment sharing, informal credit networks, and cooperative food-preservation routines that persist across seasons. The approach highlights the importance of trust, social capital, and flexible social norms in sustaining livelihoods under environmental variability.

Critics argue that the term can obscure structural inequalities or romanticize mutual aid; empirical measurement is challenging, and the applicability of örverurog may vary across cultures. Nevertheless, it is used to illustrate how decentralized, adaptive networks can contribute to resilience in coupled human–environment systems.
