Yksikkösolu (unit cell) is the smallest repeating unit of a crystal lattice. It is a three-dimensional parallelepiped that, when translated in three non-coplanar directions, fills the entire crystal space without gaps or overlaps. The shape and size of the unit cell are defined by its lattice parameters, which include the lengths of the three crystallographic axes and the angles between them.

There are 14 unique Bravais lattices, which are classified into seven crystal systems based on the symmetry of their unit cells. These systems are cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, monoclinic, triclinic, hexagonal, and trigonal. Within each crystal system, different arrangements of lattice points can occur, leading to the distinct Bravais lattices. For example, in the cubic system, one can find primitive cubic (P), body-centered cubic (I), and face-centered cubic (F) lattices.

The concept of the unit cell is fundamental to understanding the structure and properties of crystalline materials. By studying the arrangement of atoms within a single unit cell, scientists can deduce the overall structure of the crystal and predict its physical and chemical behaviors, such as its mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, and optical properties. The unit cell's dimensions are directly related to macroscopic properties like density and the spacing between crystallographic planes, which are crucial in techniques like X-ray diffraction for material characterization.
