Yhteislämmitys, often translated as district heating, is a system for distributing heat generated from a central source to multiple buildings. This central source can be a power plant, a dedicated boiler, or even waste heat from industrial processes. The heat is then transported through a network of underground insulated pipes to homes, offices, and other establishments.

The primary benefit of yhteislämmitys is its efficiency. Centralized heat production allows for economies of scale and the use of more advanced and environmentally friendly technologies, such as combined heat and power (CHP) plants that produce both electricity and heat simultaneously. This often leads to lower emissions compared to individual heating systems in each building.

Yhteislämmitys systems are common in many countries, particularly in Northern Europe, where they play a significant role in urban heating infrastructure. The implementation of such systems requires substantial initial investment in the central production facilities and the extensive pipe network. However, once established, it can offer reliable and cost-effective heating for consumers.
