Wasterate is a metric used to measure the proportion of material or output that is waste in a production or processing system. The term is not standardized and may be used in various industries to assess efficiency, cost, and resource use.

Calculation and scope: Wasterate is typically defined as the amount of waste produced during a period divided by the total input or total production in that period. It can be expressed as a percentage or a ratio and may be measured by weight, volume, mass, energy, or other units appropriate to the process. Boundaries for what counts as waste may include rejects, scrap, defective products, spoilage, and unutilized capacity.

Applications: Wasterate is used in manufacturing, food processing, agriculture, energy production, and data processing to identify losses, compare processes, monitor improvements, and set performance targets. It is related to, but distinct from, wastage rate used in budgeting or resource planning, and to yield or scrap rate used in production accounting.

Example: A factory processes 10,000 kg of raw material in a shift, producing 9,700 kg of finished goods and 300 kg of waste (scrap and defects). Wasterate = 300 / 10,000 = 3%.

Limitations: The concept depends on how waste is defined and where system boundaries are drawn. Different processes may have different acceptable waste levels, and comparing wasterate across domains requires consistent definitions and context. It is most useful when used alongside other metrics such as yield, efficiency, and cost of waste.
