Vörösvértesttermelés, also known as erythropoiesis, is the process by which red blood cells are produced. This vital biological function primarily occurs in the bone marrow of mammals, although in fetal development it takes place in the liver and spleen. The entire process, from the initial stem cell to a mature red blood cell, takes approximately seven days.

The production of red blood cells is tightly regulated by a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO). EPO is released by the kidneys in response to low oxygen levels in the blood, a condition known as hypoxia. When oxygen levels drop, the kidneys detect this and increase EPO production. This EPO then travels to the bone marrow and stimulates the differentiation and proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells into red blood cell precursors.

These precursors undergo several developmental stages, including the proerythroblast, erythroblast, reticulocyte, and finally, the mature erythrocyte. During this maturation, the cell nucleus is extruded, and the cytoplasm fills with hemoglobin, the protein responsible for carrying oxygen. Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells that are released into the bloodstream before they are fully mature. They typically mature into erythrocytes within one to two days.

The lifespan of a red blood cell is about 120 days. Once they reach the end of their life, they are removed from circulation, primarily by macrophages in the spleen and liver. The iron from the degraded hemoglobin is then recycled for new red blood cell production, showcasing the efficiency of this system.
