Võrgurouterid, or network routers, are essential devices that direct data traffic between computer networks. The primary function of a router is to forward packets. When a router receives a data packet, it examines the destination IP address within the packet's header. Based on this information, the router forwards the packet to the next hop or directly to its destination if it's on a directly connected network.

Routers also perform other important functions. They can translate network addresses (NAT - Network Address Translation), allowing multiple devices on a private network to share a single public IP address. This enhances security by hiding the internal network structure from the outside world. Additionally, routers can manage network traffic through Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms, prioritizing certain types of data to ensure smooth performance for critical applications.

There are various types of routers, including home routers, which are typically used to connect a home network to the internet, and enterprise routers, designed for more complex and high-traffic business environments. The technology behind routers is constantly evolving to handle increasing data demands and new networking protocols.
