Vívódás is the Hungarian word for fencing, a combat sport in which two opponents use swords to score points. The sport has evolved from ancient dueling practices into a highly stylized and athletic discipline. Modern fencing competitions involve three distinct weapons: foil, épée, and sabre, each with its own rules regarding valid target areas and scoring.

In foil fencing, the tip of the blade is used to score, and only touches to the torso are considered valid. Épée fencing also uses the tip of the blade, but the entire body is a valid target. Sabre fencing allows thrusts and cuts from the tip and edges of the blade, with the valid target area being the upper body from the waist up, including the arms and head.

Fencers wear protective gear, including masks, jackets, and gloves, to prevent injury. The objective is to outmaneuver and outwit the opponent, utilizing speed, precision, and strategy. A bout typically consists of three three-minute periods, with the first fencer to reach a predetermined number of points, usually 15, declared the winner. In the event of a tie, a sudden-death overtime period is played. Fencing demands significant physical and mental agility, requiring quick reflexes, excellent coordination, and strategic thinking. It is an Olympic sport with a long and rich history.
