Véralvadás is the Hungarian term for blood coagulation or clotting. It is a crucial biological process that prevents excessive bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. This complex cascade involves a series of protein molecules called clotting factors, which interact in a specific sequence. When a blood vessel is damaged, platelets, small cell fragments in the blood, gather at the site of injury and form a temporary plug. Simultaneously, the clotting factors are activated, leading to the formation of fibrin, a strong, fibrous protein. Fibrin then forms a mesh that traps more platelets and blood cells, reinforcing the clot and sealing the damaged vessel.

The process is tightly regulated to ensure that clotting occurs only when needed and that existing clots are eventually broken down. Anticoagulant proteins help prevent excessive clotting within the blood vessels. Disorders of véralvadás can lead to either excessive bleeding (hemorrhage) or the formation of unwanted blood clots (thrombosis), which can cause serious medical conditions such as stroke or heart attack. Many medical conditions and medications can affect the véralvadás process.
