vélanámslíkan
Vélanámslíkan is a term derived from the Icelandic language, specifically from elements "véla" and "námslíkan". It refers to an educational or schooling charter granted within the Icelandic chieftainship system. During the Settlement Period of Iceland, each chieftain held significant authority over his respective turf or area of settlement.
Part of this authority extended to granting vélanámslíkan to a chosen recipient, usually a scholar or student.
The recipient would typically use this privilege to assert their right to an advanced level of education
Research indicates that vélanámslíkan served an important role in perpetuating educational opportunities for prominent Scandinavian descendants.
