A vårdnadshavare in Sweden is a legal guardian appointed to care for a child. When parents divorce or separate, they can share joint custody, meaning both parents remain vårdnadshavare and must cooperate in making decisions about the child. Alternatively, one parent may be granted sole custody, becoming the sole vårdnadshavare. In situations where neither parent is deemed fit to care for the child, or if the child is placed in foster care, the municipality's social services may be appointed as the vårdnadshavare.
