Vågvindning is a Swedish term that translates to "wave winding" in English and refers to a specific method of winding coils, particularly in electrical machines. This technique is employed in the construction of armatures for generators and motors. In wave winding, the coils are arranged in such a way that the winding passes back and forth across the armature, forming a wave-like pattern.

The characteristic feature of wave winding is that it uses fewer parallel paths than lap winding, which is another common method. Typically, a wave-wound armature has two parallel paths, regardless of the number of poles in the machine. This simplification in the winding arrangement can lead to certain advantages, such as a lower voltage in each parallel path and a higher current capacity for the armature as a whole.

The connection of the coils in a wave winding is such that the beginning of one coil is connected to the end of the coil in the next slot, and this progresses around the armature. The brushes are then placed in such a way that they connect the starting end of the winding to the finishing end, effectively bridging the two parallel paths. This arrangement is particularly beneficial for DC generators requiring high voltage and low current. Despite its advantages, wave winding can be more complex to implement in some cases compared to lap winding.
