Split-complementary, monochromatic, and other variations are also used. The choice of relationships affects mood, legibility, and visual hierarchy, guiding how viewers perceive a design at a glance.

Color relationships are shaped by context such as lighting, material, and medium, and by cultural associations. Designers consider readability and accessibility, including contrast for text and interactive elements. In digital work, colors are tested across devices and color spaces like RGB and hex, and may be analyzed in perceptual spaces such as CIELAB or CIEDE2000 to estimate color difference and harmony.

Historically, color theory traces back to optics and artists who explored the interaction of colors and the organization of color in perceptually uniform systems.
