Värviedastus, also known as color rendition or color reproduction, refers to the ability of a display or lighting system to accurately reproduce the colors of an object or scene. It is a crucial factor in fields such as photography, graphic design, printing, and even everyday visual perception. When a display has good color rendition, the colors seen on the screen are very close to the actual colors of the original source. Conversely, poor color rendition can lead to colors appearing distorted, oversaturated, undersaturated, or shifted in hue.

The concept is often quantified using a metric called the Color Rendering Index (CRI). The CRI measures how well a light source reveals the colors of objects compared to a standard light source, typically a natural daylight source. A CRI of 100 indicates that the light source reproduces colors perfectly. Lower CRI values suggest that some colors may appear different under that light source compared to the reference. Different applications may have varying requirements for CRI. For instance, a museum exhibit might require very high CRI lighting to preserve and accurately display artwork, while general ambient lighting might tolerate a lower CRI.

Understanding and optimizing color rendition is essential for ensuring visual accuracy and consistency across different media and viewing conditions. It impacts how consumers perceive products, how artists communicate their vision, and how accurately scientific data is interpreted.
