Vänsterkammaren, also known as the left ventricle, is the largest and most muscular chamber of the heart. It is responsible for pumping oxygenated blood from the lungs to the rest of the body. The wall of the left ventricle is significantly thicker than that of the right ventricle due to the higher pressure it must generate to perfuse the systemic circulation.

The left ventricle receives oxygenated blood from the left atrium through the mitral valve. During diastole, the mitral valve opens, allowing blood to fill the left ventricle. As the ventricle contracts during systole, the mitral valve closes, and the aortic valve opens, allowing blood to be ejected into the aorta, which then distributes it to the entire body.

The electrical impulse that initiates the contraction of the left ventricle originates in the sinoatrial (SA) node, travels through the atria, and then to the atrioventricular (AV) node. From the AV node, the impulse is conducted down the bundle of His and Purkinje fibers, causing coordinated contraction of the ventricular muscle.

Conditions affecting the left ventricle can have serious consequences. These include left ventricular hypertrophy, where the muscle wall thickens, often due to conditions like hypertension or aortic stenosis. Heart failure can occur when the left ventricle is unable to pump blood effectively. Myocardial infarction, or heart attack, is often caused by a blockage of the coronary arteries supplying blood to the left ventricular muscle.
