Városállamoktól is a term that refers to historical city-states or their remnants. These were essentially independent political entities centered around a single city and its surrounding territory. Throughout history, numerous examples of such urban centers have existed, wielding significant influence due to their strategic locations, economic power, or cultural importance.

The concept of a városállam is not limited to one geographical region or time period. Ancient Mesopotamia saw the rise of powerful city-states like Ur and Babylon. Classical Greece is perhaps most famous for its city-states, including Athens, Sparta, and Corinth, which developed distinct political systems and cultural identities. The Italian Renaissance was also characterized by a resurgence of city-states, such as Florence, Venice, and Genoa, which became centers of trade, art, and innovation.

These urban centers often possessed their own governments, laws, and military forces. Their independence could vary, sometimes being completely sovereign and at other times maintaining a degree of autonomy within larger empires or kingdoms.
