Vuosilustoja is a Finnish term that translates to "annual rings" or "growth rings" in English. These are the distinct layers of wood that form in trees and woody plants each year. The formation of these rings is a direct result of seasonal variations in growth.

During the spring and early summer, when conditions are favorable for growth, trees produce large, thin-walled cells. This wood is lighter in color and is known as earlywood or springwood. As the growing season progresses into late summer and fall, growth slows down, and the cells produced are smaller, thicker-walled, and darker. This is called latewood or summerwood.

The contrast between the lighter earlywood and the darker latewood of one year's growth creates the visible ring. By counting these rings, one can determine the age of a tree. This method of age determination is called dendrochronology, which also studies the patterns of the rings to understand past environmental conditions such as rainfall, temperature, and even events like fires or insect infestations. The width and characteristics of the annual rings can provide valuable insights into the history of a tree and its environment.
