Volkslied, literally “folk song” in German, denotes a traditional song that originated among ordinary people and was transmitted through oral tradition across generations. It tends to have a simple melody, a straightforward structure, and is often sung in community settings. Many Volkslieder are anonymous, while others were later collected or arranged by scholars and composers.

In German-speaking lands, Volkslieder formed a broad repertoire that practitioners have linked to regional customs, dialects, and historical moments. From the early modern period through the 19th century, Romantic writers and folklorists sought to preserve and valorize such songs as expressions of national or regional culture. The study and publication of Volkslieder became a cornerstone of folklore, helping to document linguistic varieties and social life.

Musically, Volkslieder are usually sung in a simple, singable style, frequently in a strophic form with one or few verses and sometimes a refrain. Melodies are typically diatonic, and accompaniment—when present—is modest. The texts cover everyday life, work, love, nature, harvest, and festivals, and they may carry communal memory or social sentiment.

In later periods, the term remained a general label for traditional songs, while the related field of Volksmusik and the broader idea of a national folk repertoire influenced education, theater, and popular culture.
