Voimalähteitä, Finnish for power sources, refers to any device or system that produces electrical energy. These sources are fundamental to modern life, enabling everything from lighting and heating to communication and transportation. They can be broadly categorized into renewable and non-renewable types.

Non-renewable power sources are finite resources that are consumed as they are used. The most common examples include fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. Nuclear power, which utilizes uranium, is also considered non-renewable, though its energy output is substantial. These sources have historically been dominant due to their high energy density and established infrastructure, but their use contributes to pollution and climate change.

Renewable power sources are naturally replenished and are considered sustainable. Solar energy, harnessed from sunlight, and wind energy, captured by turbines, are prominent examples. Hydropower, generated from the movement of water, and geothermal energy, derived from the Earth's internal heat, are also significant renewable sources. Biomass, energy from organic matter, represents another renewable option.
