The Visigoths were a Germanic people who played a significant role in the late Roman Empire and the early Middle Ages. Originating from the larger Gothic groups, they migrated from Scandinavia towards the Black Sea region. By the late 4th century, they began to interact with the Roman Empire, initially seeking refuge from the Huns. Their relationship with Rome was complex, marked by periods of alliance and conflict.

In 410 CE, under their leader Alaric, the Visigoths famously sacked Rome, an event that sent shockwaves throughout the Mediterranean world. Following this, they moved into southwestern Gaul (modern France), establishing a kingdom with its capital at Toulouse. This kingdom eventually expanded, also encompassing much of the Iberian Peninsula (modern Spain and Portugal).

The Visigothic Kingdom in Iberia lasted for several centuries. They adopted Roman administrative structures and law, and a significant development was their conversion from Arian Christianity to Nicene Christianity (Catholicism) in the late 6th century. This conversion helped to unify the kingdom and integrate them further into the broader Romanized world. The Visigothic Kingdom in Iberia eventually fell to the Umayyad Caliphate's invasion in 711 CE.
