Virtsamisen is Finnish for urination or the act of urinating. In medical terminology, urination or micturition refers to the process by which urine is expelled from the urinary bladder through the urethra. The term is used to describe normal physiological function as well as disorders related to bladder storage and voiding.

Physiology: The bladder stores urine until a voluntary decision to void; the detrusor smooth muscle contracts to eject urine, while the internal urethral sphincter relaxes involuntarily and the external urethral sphincter enables voluntary control. The micturition reflex coordinates bladder emptying via the spinal cord and brain, with higher centers providing social and behavioral control. Typical adult bladder capacity is about 300–500 mL, though the urge to void commonly appears earlier and varies considerably among individuals.

Clinical notes: Normal urination requires intact urinary tract anatomy and nervous system control. Common issues include urinary incontinence (loss of control), urinary retention (inability to empty the bladder), and urinary tract infections which can cause painful or frequent urination. Chronic conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, neurogenic bladder, or diabetes can affect urination. Evaluation typically includes patient history, physical examination, and possibly urine tests.
