Virtsaamisessa, also known as urination or micturition, is the process by which an organism expels urine from its body. This physiological function is essential for the removal of waste products and excess fluid that have been filtered from the blood by the kidneys. The process involves a complex interplay of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.

The kidneys continuously produce urine by filtering blood. Urine then travels down the ureters, which are tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder. The bladder, a muscular organ, stores urine until it is full. When the bladder reaches a certain capacity, stretch receptors send signals to the brain, triggering the urge to urinate.

Voluntary control over urination is achieved through the relaxation of the external urethral sphincter, a muscle at the base of the bladder. The detrusor muscle in the bladder wall contracts, expelling urine through the urethra and out of the body. Factors such as fluid intake, diet, medications, and underlying medical conditions can affect the frequency and volume of urination. Disruptions to this process can lead to various urinary tract issues.
