Vinkalkaloidit, also known as vinca alkaloids, are a group of naturally occurring chemical compounds derived from the Madagascar periwinkle plant (Catharanthus roseus). These alkaloids are primarily known for their potent anti-cancer properties and are used in chemotherapy. The most well-known vinca alkaloids are vinblastine and vincristine. They function by inhibiting microtubule polymerization, a crucial process in cell division. By disrupting the formation of the mitotic spindle, they prevent cancer cells from dividing and growing, ultimately leading to cell death.

The discovery of vinca alkaloids dates back to the 1950s when researchers were investigating traditional medicinal uses of the periwinkle plant for diabetes. While they proved ineffective for diabetes, their cytotoxic effects on cancer cells were soon identified. Vinblastine and vincristine have been instrumental in treating a variety of cancers, including Hodgkin's lymphoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and certain types of leukemia.

Despite their therapeutic benefits, vinca alkaloids are associated with significant side effects due to their mechanism of action, which affects rapidly dividing cells, including healthy ones. Common side effects include bone marrow suppression, neurotoxicity (leading to nerve damage and neuropathy), gastrointestinal disturbances, and hair loss. Due to their toxicity, they are administered under strict medical supervision. Ongoing research continues to explore modified versions of these alkaloids and new therapeutic applications.
