vestfløj

Vestfløj is a Danish architectural term that refers to the western wing of a building or of a building complex. Derived from vest meaning west and fløj meaning wing, the term is used to describe the part of a structure that lies on the western side, typically attached to a central block or courtyard and often forming a counterpart to the østfløj (eastern wing).

In many Danish palaces, manor houses, and institutional buildings, the vestfløj houses a distinct functional suite, such as private living quarters, service areas, or offices, and may include staircases, corridors, and ancillary rooms. The design and scale of a vestfløj can vary widely, from a single-story annex to a multi-story wing that extends the main facade. Historically, wings were added to buildings to expand capacity or reorganize function; the west wing might shelter the principal entrance on a western axis or host ceremonial rooms, while the east wing could contain workspaces or other functions.

In heritage and architectural descriptions, vestfløj is used to specify the western part of a building, alongside the østfløj. The term remains common in Danish architectural history, building plans, and conservation documentation, where precise orientation relative to the main block is important.
