Vedenottoon is a traditional communal ritual of water governance described in worldbuilding sources for the fictional archipelago of Erythos. The term refers to a coordinated process of water extraction, storage, and distribution that occurs during the dry season to balance the needs of households, farms, and fisheries.

Etymology and meaning: The word comes from the Veden language of the archipelago, combining veden- meaning water with nottoon meaning gathering or allocation. The ritual is symbolically linked to the bronze vessel called the Varo, used to measure and transfer water.

Ritual practice: Vedenottoon centers on the Great Basin, a central reservoir at the island’s core. On the appointed day, water-keepers assemble with elders and community representatives. Rainfall data, soil moisture, and projected demand are reviewed; quotas are allocated for households, farmers, and fishers; water is released through a network of channels, with songs marking key moments. Violations of the quotas are addressed by the Council of Flow.

Social role and variations: The practice reinforces social equity and collective responsibility, with rituals of offering and reciprocity. Different clans and regions show variations in ceremony, vessel type, and quota rules. In some communities, vedenottoon has become partly codified in municipal water policy while retaining its ceremonial elements.
