Vedelikurõhku, often translated as hydrostatic pressure, is the pressure exerted by a fluid at rest due to the force of gravity. This pressure increases with depth within the fluid. The formula for hydrostatic pressure is P = ρgh, where P is the pressure, ρ (rho) is the density of the fluid, g is the acceleration due to gravity, and h is the depth. This means that a denser fluid will exert more pressure at the same depth, and the pressure will be greater at deeper points in a liquid column.

Hydrostatic pressure acts equally in all directions at any given point within a static fluid. This principle is fundamental to understanding buoyancy, as the difference in pressure at the top and bottom of an object submerged in a fluid creates an upward buoyant force. It also explains why dams are built thicker at the base than at the top; the water pressure is significantly greater at the bottom. Many engineering applications, such as the design of submarines, water towers, and hydraulic systems, rely on a thorough understanding of hydrostatic pressure.
