A vaned diffuser is a flow-control device that uses stationary blades, or vanes, to direct and diffuse a fluid stream. It appears in two common contexts: heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and turbomachinery, where precise control of flow direction and pressure is important.

In HVAC, vaned diffusers are components installed in ceilings, walls, or diffusers panels with adjustable or fixed vanes. They shape the exit air pattern to control throw, direction, and mixing with room air. The vane arrangement—number, angle, and orientation—determines whether the flow is dispersed for diffuse lecture-style distribution or directed for targeted ventilation. They are available in circular, square, or rectangular forms and are used to balance comfort, energy efficiency, and air quality.

In turbomachinery, a vaned diffuser refers to a set of stationary blades downstream of an impeller or rotor. The vanes decelerate the flow and straighten residual swirl, converting kinetic energy into static pressure to improve pressure recovery and overall efficiency of devices such as centrifugal compressors, axial compressors, and certain turbines. Diffuser geometry, including vane count, angle, and chord length, is critical for efficiency, surge margin, and stable operation.

Key considerations for both applications include pressure loss, noise, maintenance, and manufacturability. In HVAC, diffuser performance affects occupant comfort and energy use; in machinery, it influences efficiency and performance under varying flow conditions.
