A valokäyräkaksoistähti, or light curve binary, is a binary star system whose presence and properties are primarily detected through the characteristic variations in its brightness over time. As the two stars orbit each other, their relative positions change, leading to predictable patterns in the light received by an observer. The most common type of light curve binary is an eclipsing binary. In an eclipsing binary, one star passes in front of the other from our perspective. When the dimmer star eclipses the brighter star, the total brightness decreases, and when the brighter star eclipses the dimmer star, a different depth of dimming occurs. The shape and duration of these dips in the light curve provide crucial information about the stars.

The specific pattern of brightening and dimming, known as the light curve, reveals important details about the binary system. The depth of the eclipses indicates the relative sizes of the stars and their surface brightness. The time between successive eclipses determines the orbital period of the system. Analyzing subtle changes in the timing of these eclipses can reveal the presence of other celestial bodies in the system, such as planets, or indicate interactions between the stars. Non-eclipsing binary stars can also exhibit light variations due to the reflection of light from one star onto the surface of the other, or due to tidal distortions of their shapes if they are very close. The study of light curve binaries is a fundamental technique in astronomy for determining stellar masses, radii, temperatures, and orbital parameters, contributing significantly to our understanding of stellar evolution and the diversity of star systems.
