Vahetusringluse, also known as the phosphorus cycle, is a biogeochemical cycle that describes the movement of phosphorus through the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for all living organisms, playing a critical role in the structure of DNA and RNA, cell membranes, and energy transfer within cells. Unlike many other nutrient cycles, the phosphorus cycle does not have a significant atmospheric component.

The primary reservoir of phosphorus is rocks and sediments. Over geological timescales, weathering of these rocks releases phosphate ions into the soil and water. Plants absorb these inorganic phosphate ions from the soil through their roots. Animals obtain phosphorus by consuming plants or other animals. When organisms die, decomposers break down organic matter, returning phosphate ions to the soil and water, thus completing the cycle.

Human activities have significantly impacted the phosphorus cycle. The mining of phosphate rock for fertilizers and detergents has led to increased phosphate levels in aquatic ecosystems. This excess phosphorus can cause eutrophication, a process where excessive algal growth depletes oxygen levels, harming aquatic life. Wastewater treatment and responsible agricultural practices are crucial for mitigating these impacts.
