Värddjur, often translated as host, is a biological term referring to an organism that harbors a parasite or commensal. The värddjur provides shelter and/or nourishment for the other organism, which is known as the symbiont. This relationship can be of various types, including parasitic, commensal, or mutualistic. In a parasitic relationship, the värddjur is harmed by the presence of the symbiont. In a commensal relationship, the värddjur is neither significantly harmed nor benefited, while the symbiont benefits. In a mutualistic relationship, both organisms benefit.
