These are the standardized starting squares for each piece before the first move is made. The arrangement is crucial as it dictates the initial defensive and offensive capabilities of each side.

The white king and queen begin on d1 and e1 respectively, with the rooks on a1 and h1, the knights on b1 and g1, and the bishops on c1 and f1. Pawns occupy the second rank, from a2 to h2.
