The urinary system, also known as the renal system, is a group of organs in the body responsible for producing, storing, and eliminating urine. It plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis by regulating blood pressure, electrolyte balance, and red blood cell production. The primary organs of the urinary system are the kidneys, two bean-shaped organs located on either side of the spine.

Within the kidneys, millions of nephrons act as the functional units. Each nephron filters waste products from the blood, reabsorbs essential substances, and produces urine. The urine then travels from the kidneys through two narrow tubes called ureters, which lead to the bladder. The bladder is a hollow, muscular organ that stores urine. When the bladder is full, the urge to urinate is triggered.

The final part of the urinary system is the urethra, a tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. Urination, or voiding, is a process controlled by both voluntary and involuntary muscles. The kidneys are vital for removing metabolic wastes, such as urea, and excess salts and water from the body, thus preventing the buildup of toxic substances. Disruptions to the urinary system can lead to various health issues, including infections, kidney stones, and kidney disease.
