Urinblåseutvidgningar, also known as bladder distention or urinary bladder distention, refers to the condition where the urinary bladder becomes abnormally stretched or enlarged. This can occur due to a variety of reasons, including prolonged urine retention, obstruction of the urinary tract, or certain neurological conditions affecting bladder function.

When the bladder is unable to empty properly, urine accumulates, leading to its distention. This can be caused by blockages such as an enlarged prostate in men, kidney stones, or strictures in the urethra. Neurogenic bladder dysfunction, which results from nerve damage affecting bladder control, can also lead to chronic distention. In some cases, a fear of urination, known as paruresis, might contribute to the voluntary holding of urine, eventually causing distention.

Symptoms of bladder distention can include a feeling of fullness or pressure in the lower abdomen, pain, and a frequent urge to urinate that may not result in significant urine output. In severe or prolonged cases, this condition can lead to urinary incontinence, kidney damage, or infections due to stagnant urine.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, urine tests to check for infection, and imaging studies such as ultrasound or CT scans to assess bladder size and identify any obstructions. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. If an obstruction is present, it needs to be addressed. In cases of chronic retention, a catheter may be used to drain the bladder. Addressing neurological causes often involves managing the underlying condition and may require medication or specific bladder retraining techniques.
