Umpisuolesta, also known as the cecum, is a small pouch connected to the junction of the small and large intestines in the abdomen. It is the beginning of the large intestine. The appendix, a small finger-like appendage, is attached to the cecum. The primary function of the cecum is to absorb fluids and salts that remain after the digestive process and to mix its contents with mucus.

While historically its exact role in digestion was debated, current understanding suggests it plays a part in the absorption of water and electrolytes, and in the presence of gut bacteria that aid in the breakdown of certain materials. The cecum's role in nutrient absorption is less significant than that of the small intestine. The appendix, though once considered vestigial, is now thought to have a role in housing beneficial gut bacteria, acting as a reserve, and potentially contributing to immune function. Inflammation of the cecum itself is uncommon, but inflammation of the appendix, appendicitis, is a well-known condition requiring medical attention. The cecum is a fixed part of the gastrointestinal tract and is located in the lower right abdomen.
