Umetnost is the term used in several South Slavic languages, including Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, and Slovenian, to denote art as a broad field of human creativity and expression. In many contexts it also refers to the arts as a cultural discipline studied in schools and universities.

The word derives from Slavic roots related to skill or workmanship, with the suffix -nost forming an abstract noun. The related noun umetnik means artist. This etymology reflects the long-standing view of art as a form of skilled activity and knowledge.

Historically, umetnost has varied with aesthetic theories and social functions.
