Ultraviolet Radiation

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation that is not visible to the human eye due to its shorter wavelength compared to visible light. The term "Ultraviolet" is derived from the Latin words "ultra," meaning beyond, and "violet," referring to the longest wavelength of visible light.

UV radiation is produced by various sources, including the sun, lightning, and some forms of industrial equipment. The sun's UV radiation is a major factor in the formation of vitamin D in human skin, but prolonged exposure to UV radiation can also cause damage to living tissues, including sunburn, eye damage, and increased risk of skin cancer.

There are different classes of UV radiation, which are categorized by their wavelength. UVA radiation has a longer wavelength (320-400 nanometers) and penetrates deeper into the skin, while UVB radiation has a shorter wavelength (290-320 nanometers) and is responsible for the majority of UV-induced damage to skin cells. UVC radiation, with a shorter wavelength (100-290 nanometers), is largely absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere and does not reach the ground in significant quantities.

UV radiation has various applications in scientific research, industries, and daily life. For example, it is used in DNA sequencing, disinfection of medical equipment, and water treatment. However, its harmful effects on human health and the environment have led to increased awareness and concerns about exposure limits and protection measures, such as wearing protective clothing, eyewear, and sunscreen.
