Ultravioleinen is a term that refers to a specific range of electromagnetic radiation. This radiation falls between visible light and X-rays on the electromagnetic spectrum. Its wavelength is shorter than visible light but longer than X-rays, typically ranging from approximately 10 nanometers to 400 nanometers.

The ultraviolet spectrum is further divided into three categories: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA rays have the longest wavelengths and can penetrate the skin, contributing to aging and wrinkling. UVB rays have shorter wavelengths and are primarily responsible for sunburn and play a crucial role in vitamin D production in the skin. UVC rays have the shortest wavelengths and are the most energetic, but they are mostly absorbed by the Earth's ozone layer, preventing them from reaching the surface.

Naturally, the primary source of ultraviolet radiation is the Sun. However, artificial sources also exist, such as tanning beds, black lights, and certain types of sterilization lamps. While exposure to sunlight provides beneficial vitamin D, excessive or unprotected exposure to ultraviolet radiation, particularly UVB and UVC, can be harmful, leading to skin damage, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Conversely, controlled applications of UV radiation are utilized in medical treatments and for sterilization purposes due to its germicidal properties.
