Tvåvägshydraulik, or two-way hydraulics, refers to a hydraulic system where fluid can flow in both directions through a specific line or circuit. This is in contrast to single-acting cylinders that typically only receive hydraulic pressure on one side to extend, with gravity or a spring returning the rod. In a two-way hydraulic system, pressurized fluid can be directed to either side of a piston in a cylinder, allowing for controlled extension and retraction.

This is commonly achieved using a directional control valve. The valve can be configured to direct the hydraulic fluid from the pump to one port of the cylinder while simultaneously allowing fluid from the other port to return to the reservoir. By shifting the valve, the flow can be reversed, causing the cylinder to retract. This capability is crucial for applications requiring powered movement in both directions, such as steering systems, excavators, and load-lifting equipment. The precise control over both extension and retraction makes two-way hydraulics a fundamental component in many industrial and mobile machinery applications.
