Tussentitels, a Dutch term, translates to "intertitles" in English. These were text cards inserted into silent films to convey dialogue, narration, or exposition that couldn't be communicated through visual means alone. Silent films relied heavily on the actors' expressions and gestures, but certain plot points or complex conversations required textual clarification. Tussentitels served this crucial function, acting as a bridge between scenes and guiding the audience's understanding of the narrative.

The design and placement of tussentitels varied. They could be simple white text on a black background or more elaborate designs that sometimes mirrored the film's aesthetic. Their placement within the film was also strategic, appearing before or after a scene to set context or provide a character's spoken words. As filmmaking evolved and sound was introduced, the necessity of tussentitels diminished. Dialogue could now be directly heard by the audience, making the intertitles largely obsolete.
