Turvatõend, often translated as security certificate or trust certificate, is a digital document used to verify the identity of a website or online service. It plays a crucial role in establishing trust and security in online communications. When you visit a website that uses a turvatõend, your browser can connect to a trusted third party, known as a Certificate Authority (CA), to confirm the legitimacy of the website's server. This process helps to prevent users from connecting to fraudulent or malicious sites that might be impersonating legitimate ones.

The turvatõend contains information such as the domain name of the website, the name of the organization that owns it, the issuing CA, and a unique serial number. It also includes a digital signature from the CA, which allows your browser to verify that the certificate has not been tampered with. The most visible sign that a website has a valid turvatõend is the presence of "https" in the web address and often a padlock icon in the browser's address bar. This indicates that the connection between your browser and the website is encrypted, protecting sensitive data like login credentials and financial information from being intercepted by third parties. Without a turvatõend, online transactions and communications would be significantly less secure.
