Turbinetype is a term that refers to the classification of turbines based on their fundamental operating principles and design characteristics. These classifications are crucial for understanding how a turbine harnesses energy from a fluid flow, whether it be water, steam, or air.

One of the primary distinctions is between impulse and reaction turbines. Impulse turbines operate by changing the direction of the fluid flow, causing a change in momentum that generates force on the turbine blades. The pressure of the fluid remains constant across the turbine blades themselves. Examples include the Pelton wheel for hydropower.

Reaction turbines, on the other hand, utilize both the change in fluid momentum and a pressure drop across the turbine blades to produce torque. The fluid pressure decreases as it passes through the rotating blades, leading to an increase in its velocity relative to the blades. Francis turbines and Kaplan turbines in hydropower, as well as steam turbines and most wind turbines, are examples of reaction turbines.

Further classifications exist within these broad categories. For instance, in hydropower, turbines are also categorized by the head of water they are designed to operate with, such as high-head, medium-head, and low-head turbines. In steam turbines, distinctions are made between axial flow and radial flow designs, and whether they are single-stage or multi-stage. Wind turbines are classified by their axis of rotation, with horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWTs) being the most common, and vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) representing an alternative design. Understanding the specific turbinetype is essential for selecting the most efficient and appropriate machine for a given application and energy source.
