Tulivuorivyö, also known as a ring of fire, is a major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. The term was first used by American geologist Woodrow Wilson in 1898. The ring of fire is about 40,000 kilometers (25,000 miles) long and includes 452 volcanoes and over 540 active and dormant volcanoes. It is home to 75% of the world's active volcanoes and 90% of the world's earthquakes.
