Trombocitákhoz is a Hungarian term that translates to "platelets" in English. Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are small, irregular-shaped cell fragments that circulate in the blood. They play a crucial role in hemostasis, the process of stopping bleeding. When a blood vessel is injured, platelets aggregate at the site of the wound, forming a temporary plug. They also release various factors that promote blood clotting, a complex cascade of reactions that ultimately leads to the formation of a stable fibrin clot, sealing the injured vessel and preventing excessive blood loss.

The production of platelets, a process called thrombopoiesis, occurs in the bone marrow. Hematopoietic stem cells differentiate into megakaryocytes, large cells that fragment into thousands of platelets. The lifespan of a platelet is typically around 7 to 10 days, after which they are removed from circulation by macrophages, primarily in the spleen and liver.

The normal platelet count in adults ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood. A low platelet count, known as thrombocytopenia, can result in increased bleeding risk, while a high platelet count, or thrombocytosis, can increase the risk of blood clots.
