Trochaics are a metrical foot in poetry consisting of two syllables, the first stressed and the second unstressed. This pattern is often described as "stressed-unstressed" or / U. The opposite of a trochaic foot is an iamb, which follows an "unstressed-stressed" or U / pattern.

The word "trochaic" itself is an example of a trochaic foot. Other common trochaic words include "happy," "music," and "garden." In poetry, trochaic meter is created by arranging lines so that they predominantly feature trochaic feet. A line composed entirely of trochaic feet is called trochaic tetrameter if it has four feet, or trochaic octameter if it has eight, and so on.

Trochaic meter can create a feeling of energy, decisiveness, or even a chant-like quality. It is less common in English poetry than iambic meter, which often feels more natural and conversational. However, trochaic meter is used effectively to create specific effects. For example, Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" famously employs trochaic octameter, contributing to its incantatory and somber mood. In contrast, a simple nursery rhyme like "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" also uses trochaic tetrameter, lending it a sing-song, memorable rhythm. Understanding trochaics helps in analyzing the sound and emotional impact of poetry.
