Triózfoszfát is a simple sugar molecule that plays a crucial role in cellular metabolism, particularly in the process of cellular respiration and photosynthesis. It exists in two isomeric forms: glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (G3P) and dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP). These two molecules are readily interconverted within cells.

In glycolysis, the breakdown of glucose, triose phosphates are intermediate products. Glucose is first split into two molecules of a triose phosphate. These triose phosphates are then further processed to produce ATP, the energy currency of the cell, and pyruvate. This pathway is fundamental for energy production in most organisms.

In photosynthesis, triose phosphates are the primary products of the light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle). They are synthesized from carbon dioxide and are then used to build glucose and other carbohydrates, which serve as food for the plant. Some of the triose phosphate produced is recycled to regenerate the starting molecule of the Calvin cycle, ensuring the process can continue.

The interconversion between G3P and DHAP is catalyzed by the enzyme triose phosphate isomerase. This enzyme ensures that both forms can be utilized in subsequent metabolic pathways. The presence and rapid interconversion of these molecules highlight their central position in the flow of carbon and energy within living systems. Their simple three-carbon structure and phosphate group make them ideal building blocks and energy carriers.
