tregëtarët

Tregëtarët is a term used in Albanian to refer to people who engage in commerce—buying and selling goods for profit. The word typically denotes merchants or traders, including wholesalers, retailers, and itinerant sellers. The root treg- denotes trade, and the suffix -ëtar forms an occupational noun; the definite form tregëtarët means "the merchants."

Historically, tregëtarët played a central role in the economies of Albanian lands and neighboring regions. In medieval and early modern periods, they connected rural producers with urban markets and port towns along the Adriatic and wider Mediterranean trade networks. Some operated within guilds or family business networks; others traveled as caravan traders or itinerant merchants.

Economic role: They contributed to price formation, supply chains, and credit; some acted as moneylenders or brokers. Distinctions existed between urban merchants, rural traders, and itinerant merchants, as well as between wholesale and retail activities.

In contemporary contexts, tregëtarët encompasses shopkeepers, wholesalers, and market vendors in Albania, Kosovo, and Albanian-speaking communities. Modern traders operate in formal retail settings and informal markets; e-commerce and cross-border trade are important components of contemporary commerce.
