Transmissionmåde refers to the method by which a disease or infectious agent spreads from one host to another or from the environment to a host. Understanding transmissionmåde is crucial for preventing and controlling the spread of diseases. There are several primary categories of transmission.

Direct transmission occurs when there is direct physical contact between an infected person and a susceptible person. This can include touching, kissing, or sexual contact. Droplet transmission is a form of direct transmission where infectious particles are expelled through the air in droplets during coughing, sneezing, or talking, and these droplets land on the mucous membranes of another person.

Indirect transmission involves an intermediary. Airborne transmission occurs when infectious agents are carried in the air over long distances, often in tiny particles called droplet nuclei, and inhaled by a susceptible host. Vehicle-borne transmission involves an inanimate object, or vehicle, such as contaminated food, water, blood, or surfaces, that carries the infectious agent to a host. Vector-borne transmission is when an arthropod, like a mosquito or tick, transmits the infectious agent from one host to another.

Fecal-oral transmission is a common route where infectious agents from feces contaminate hands, food, or water, which are then ingested by a susceptible individual. Understanding the specific transmissionmåde of a pathogen helps in implementing targeted public health interventions, such as vaccination, hygiene practices, vector control, and isolation of infected individuals.
